⚫"Angoor"
⚫"The lion King"
⚫"Omkara"
⚫ "Maqbool"
⚫ "Haider"
Filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj brought Shakespeare's trilogy to life on the big screen with his hit Bollywood movies 'Haider', 'Omkara' and 'Maqbool'. The 2003 movie 'Maqbool' is a modern remake of 'Macbeth' which highlights the dark side to ambition. Meanwhile, ‘Omkara’ which released in 2006 is based on the dark tragedy 'Othello' and 'Haider' in 2014 is a modern remake of 'Hamlet'.
⚫ 'RAN' (1985) is based on ‘king Lear’. The setting changed to Japan and the daughters became sons in this version but the source is clear.
⚫ Instead of “Haider,” the director Vishal Bhardwaj might have considered calling his fast-and-loose adaptation of “Hamlet” “Ghazala,” after its Gertrude character. ... By comparison Haider (Shahid Kapoor) is a simple fellow. In an un-Hamletlike way, he knows what he wants — to avenge his father — and cannily goes after it.
Vishal Bhardwaj's "Haider" is also based on William Shakespeare's "Hamlet". Haider, like the best of Shakespeare, is this perfect package,a tender love story Historical documents baked by amazing Cinematography, music, acting and writing.
⚫ comparison of characteristics of Shakespeare's Mecbeth and Vishal Bhardwaj's maqbool.
๐ Shakespeare's Mecbeth lives in twenty first century India In the form of Vishal Bharadwaj's maqbool the article takes the recurrent of religiously generated animosity in the Indian subcontinent as a textual field within which Mecbeth, under the garb of Bhardwaj provides us with the possibility ,in both Maqbool (based on Mecbeth) and Haider( based on Hamlet). The film however, may also be seen as struggle for power . The tale of Shakespeare in a twenty first century setting creates a sense of all consuming foreboding where by the polarization of Hindus and Muslims become more than a power games:It becomes symptomatic Of Indian society Where wily politicians and shrewd Policemen , render a state machinery into a den of heroin violence.
This article attempts to show how Vishal Bhardwaj, despite, spatial, temporal and cultural distances,"Creatively mistranslates" Shakespeare's Mecbeth and yet remains faithful to It's basic theme.
⚫ Mecbeth and Maqbool compare contrast:
Mecbeth becomes the king of Scotland by killing Duncan.Nimmi instead of being Maqbool's wife is Abbaji's mistress. She does not control Maqbool in this movie the way she does in the Play. ....Lady Mecbeth is stronger more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband.

⚫ Mecbeth as a Tragedy⚫
Tragedy starts with the Greeks. Greek Tragedies are religious in character. The element of fate was supreme. The characters in Greek tragedies come to ultimate ruin through defiance of the Gods or of the traditional moral order because of their hubris or excessive pride. Shakespearean tragedies are the by-product of Renaissance. Shakespearean tragedies, at least in certain respects, are fundamentally Greek in design and execution. “Shakespearean tragedy", says Bradley, "may be called a story a exceptional calamity".
The downfall of Greek heroes is pre-determined by the oracles or fate but the downfall of the Shakespearean heroes is determined by their impulse, by their passion. In Greek tragedies “Destiny is character” where we are primarily interested in how fate fulfills itself through characters. But in Shakespearean tragedies “Character is destiny” where the characters exhibit their essential worth before they succumb to their fate. In the play Macbeth, in spite being gifted with noble virtues Macbeth meets his tragic damnation for his over-vaulting ambition.
In a Shakespearean tragedy, the tragic heroes are men of high status and of noble nature. Romeo is an aristocrat; Richard II and Richard III are kings; a General; Brutus is highly placed; Antony is more than a king - an emperor; Othello is a mighty General; Hamlet is a prince; King Lear is every inch a king; and Macbeth is first a General and then a king, though not embodiment of virtue and goodness, they are much above the average level of humanity.
The heroes of Shakespeare have an inherent weakness, a tragic flaw as described by Aristotle as hamartia. This flaw makes the hero essentially human. Unlike the heroes of the Greek tragedies, the Shakespearean heroes are responsible for their 'fall. Othello faces his tragic damnation for his highly suspicious nature or easily believe what he is said; Hamlet for his indecisive nature – “to be or not to be”; King Lear for his error of judgment and in same line Macbeth for his unbridled ambition.
The brave, noble Macbeth becomes a senseless maniac, a hypocrite, a liar, a butcher. This is the tragic collapse of such a noble and gifted man. In this respect, he is like Faustus, who falls from a great scholar to an entertainer and trickster. His final portrayal “To-morrow and to-morrow and to-morrow” in which he describes what a waste he has made of life shows Macbeth’s imaginative power through which Shakespeare achieves the ambivalence of tragic effect. His despair is expressed in superb poetry:
“My way of life
Is fall’n into the sear, the yellow leaf.”
The hero of a Shakespearean tragedy is torn in conflict in his mind. Conflict both external and internal, is the crux of a Shakespearean tragedy. "No conflict, no drama", says Bernard Shaw. In Macbeth the external conflict is between Macduff and the hero; the inner conflict is between his vaulting ambition and his conscience.
In the tragedies of Shakes are there may be a triumph of Evil for the time being, but the ultimate triumph of Good is assured There may not be the poetic justice, but moral order is clearly manifest. The wicked have to pay the penalty. Macbeth has offended the moral order and he has to pay penalty by way of internal sufferings and external opposition to him.
In a Shakespearean tragedy the hero dies, and so does the heroine. Macbeth dies; Lady Macbeth also dies. Romeo and Juliet die; Othello and Desdemona die; Lear and Cordelia die; Hamlet and Ophelia die; Antony and Cleopatra die; Brutus and Portia die.
Macbeth's misdeeds are followed by Nemesis, and that gives us a clue to a new interpretation of Macbeth as a classical tragedy. As in the Greek tragedies, so also in Macbeth there is the unity of action. The tragic ironies show the resemblance between Macbeth and the Greek tragedies. Bradley, however, does not subscribe to the view that Macbeth is like a Greek tragedy. "I don’t mean", Says he, "that Shakespeare intended to write a classical tragedy.” Macbeth as a tragedy approximates very closely to the Senecan model with its blood and thunder, its murder and madness, its ghost and supernaturalism.
๐ต central theme of ' ambition' In the context of 21st century.
How does the theme of ambition weave through Shakespeare’s plays? In 21st Century Western culture we generally regard ambition as a ‘good’ thing. In these times of gender equality it is seen as quite normal that boys and girls, men and women, should harbour the same ambitions and are encouraged to pursue them into the workplace and up the ladder of promotion.
Shakespeare retains our sympathy for Macbeth even after his first murder. The first crime is inspired by ambition. His other murders are inspired by fear. Macbeth himself feels the retribution within himself. He becomes sick at heart; he is full of scorpions in his mind. He knows that he has murdered ‘sleep’, and he will live a restless, fearful and insecure life. He degenerates and this degeneration is his tragedy.
Ambition in Macbeth is far from a straightforward illustration of the theme (there are many significant Macbeth ambition quotes). For a start, it engenders a debate in the mind of the audience as to who the ambitious character is. In terms of classical tragedy Macbeth fits the bill. He’s a hero, virtually worshipped by the other feudal lords of Scotland. When he gets the idea that he can become king he believes that all he has to do is kill the king, he will be elected king, and that will be that. The rest of the play works that idea through and throws up its various complications. In the end the hero, by now regarded as a hellish villain, is brought down.
Mecbeth is a tale of ambition and so Shakespeare uses the character's motives to convey the dangers of being too ambitious. We can relate this to modern society as it is human nature to succumb to temptation and so Shakespeare gives warning of the outcome of ambition. The play was written to scare off anyone trying to overthrow King James - implying that anyone that would dare do so was in alliance with the devil (as Macbeth was with the witches) and that they would suffer an unsavoury downfall like Macbeth - and also to win favour with the new king. Today, this still carries an important message as it teaches the reader to exercise restraint when it comes to their secret desires and to be aware of the consequences that these desires hold. Macbeth, during the time the play was written, would have been considered a villain, however, we as contemporary readers recognise that Macbeth was only human and could not help but wonder at what could be instead of accepting his new title of Thane of Cawdor. Take, for example, a gambler. They make a small win and feel invincible so keep betting and betting because their greed consumes their rational thinking and soon, instead of winning, they risk all and lose. Just like the eponymous character, they lose themselves in the possibility of something better. Macbeth is an exaggeration of the dangers that come with greed and ambition but is still relevant today due to man's inability to exercise restraint when it comes to desire
๐ต As a youth of 21st century what is the learning lesson from 17th century renaissance play?
๐ Macbeth is a historical tragedy, the historical element of Macbeth applied to the 17th century, Macbeth was a message for what could possibly happen in England to the royal hierarchy. ... Macbeth showed the royal hierarchy and the people at the time, the consequences of what would happen if something like that occurred.
⚫ Also we shows a Relationship between cruelty and masculinity:
Characters in Macbeth like Lady Macbeth manipulates her husband by questioning his manhood, wishes that she herself could be “unsexed,” and does not contradict Macbeth when he says that a woman like her should give birth only to boys. In the same manner that Lady Macbeth goads her husband on to murder, Macbeth provokes the murderers he hires to kill Banquo by questioning their manhood. Such acts show that both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth equate masculinity with naked aggression, and whenever they converse about manhood, violence soon follows. Their understanding of manhood allows the political order depicted in the play.
⚫ Also there is the difference between Kingship Tyranny:
In the play, Duncan is always referred to as a “king,” while Mecbeth soon becomes known as the “tyrant.” The difference between the two types of rulers seems to be expressed in a conversation that occurs in Act 4, scene 3, when Macduff meets Malcolm in England. In order to test Macduff’s loyalty to Scotland, Malcolm pretends that he would make an even worse king than Mecbeth.
"To be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus" (3.1)
Macbeth speaks this line after he has become king, but continues to feel restless and insecure. He is afraid that he might lose his position and is also frustrated by the fact that he has no heir. Without the knowledge that his lineage will continue after him, Macbeth finds it meaningless to be king. This quote reveals how him giving in to his ambition and murdering Duncan has not brought him peace, but rather has just left him more paranoid and anxious. The line also reveals how Macbeth’s first violent action sets off a chain reaction of him continuing to commit violent actions in order to maintain his hold on the power he has gained.
๐ตIf the play Mecbeth Is relevant today then how it is!
๐ William Shakespeare's play "Tragedy of Mecbeth" continues to remain relevant to the society through his exploration of ambition, a political and ethical value Is like a double-edged sword, it's able provide success and catastrophic failure. ... Parallels to this are seen throughout modern society, particularly around politics.
Mecbeth is relevant today because people are still motivated by greed, ambition and jealousy today just like in Shakespearean times. MacBeth wanted to be King and some people today would do anything for money and power.
Lady Mecbeth wanted Mecbeth to be King, therefore Macbeth wanted to rule even more. A classic modern day parallel to Macbeth, who fits the Macbeth mould isTanya Harding. Tanya was a figure skater who was not number one. Kim Campbell on the other hand was a very good skater who had potential and great talents on the ice. When Kim was competing for third place and Tanya was below tenth, Tanya lost her common sense and was filled with jealousy and greed.
The plot of The Lion King is astonishingly similar to that of Mecbeth. In the start of Macbeth, King Duncan’s death is planned when Macbeth is told by the Three Witches that he can claim the throne if Duncan passes away before Malcolm is of age. Macbeth plans with Lady Macbeth the murder of King Duncan. After King Duncan is pronounced dead and murdered, his sons flee the area out of fear they might be next.
In The Lion King, Scar (being Macbeth) wants to get rid of Mufasa so that he can take over the Pride Lands with the help of the hyenas (the hyenas being the three witches) before Simba is of age. He does this by murdering Mufasa and manipulating the mind of innocent cub Simba to think it was his fault his father is dead. Scar convinces Simba that if he stays, everyone will hate him for killing his own father.
" Believe it or not, these modern characters somehow fall into the skin of Macbeth."
๐Interesting question!๐
Let’s take a look at what makes Macbeth unique among Shakespeare’s villains. His is the only one with a wife who is his equal when it comes to true malice. Lady Macbeth is every bit as villainous as her beleaguered husband, so finding his equal in contemporary times requires finding someone with a Lady Macbeth wire.
I cannot think of any real-life couples like this, but the lead characters in the American version of ‘House of Cards, Frank Underwood and his deliciously dispassionate wife, Claire Hale, are a perfect match to Mecbeth and Lady Mecbeth.
" Most of the politicians of present times are MACBETHS. They may do murders and also ruin lives of people beyond recognition to gain popularity and VOTES! "
